He said he did not regret taking up the role of Nato nuclear policy secretary during Nato’s second-biggest conflict in the last decade of the last century, the Iraq War.

A Nato source said he had spoken to Mr Stoltenberg and had assured him of „the serious, difficult, and difficult-to-reconstruct“ work his successors have to undertake.
Mr Rasmussen said: „The new secretary-general will work closely with his colleagues and with the security organisations in order to build a foundation on which Nato can be built.“
He said Nato remained committed to an alliance of a global security that includes nuclear forces.
The US Department of State did not comment on Mr Stoltenberg’s resignation.
